In need of someone to talk to?
Sometimes we can feel totally overwhelmed, anxious and overloaded with emotions and feelings. Counselling can provide a much-needed opportunity to talk about what’s going on for you to a professional in a safe and confidential space. The positive impact not only on you as an individual, but also on family and friends can be profound.
Here are some questions you might have about counselling – but if there’s anything else you would like to know, please contact the Clinic for more information.
What is counselling?
- Counselling therapy provides you with a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space in which to talk freely and openly about your issues and concerns with a trained professional.
What is the role of a counsellor?
- To listen and support you in exploring your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can develop a better understanding of yourself and others.
- To help you find solutions through making changes or finding coping mechanisms.
Who can benefit from counselling and how many sessions are needed?
- Counselling is a therapy for anyone regardless of gender, race, age, religious background or sexual orientation.
- Everyone and what they bring to counselling is different and therefore the number of sessions needed for each person can vary.
- This will be discussed in the first session and will be reviewed regularly to make sure the counselling is still working for you.
What sort of issues do people have counselling for?
- The sorts of issues that people come to counselling for include: depression, anxiety, mental and physical health, stress, anger, addiction, low self-esteem and difficult life events such as bereavement, relationship issues, work or study pressures, trauma, abuse, women’s health and fertility issues.
- Any issue can be brought to counselling, no matter how small or big it may seem.
What does a counselling session involve?
- The first session will involve exploring what you would like to get from counselling, how you and the counsellor can work together and whether the offered approach is right for you.
- Any sessions thereafter will be structured around exploring your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and finding ways to make changes and / or cope in your day-to-day life.
What is the type of counselling offered at the Odiham Clinic?
- Our counsellor, Katie, takes an existential and holistic approach, which means she will help you explore yourself as a whole person and external factors that impact you, to enable you to uncover what you need to heal and grow.
- Katie aims to build a strong therapeutic relationship with her clients so that they feel as comfortable and supported as possible during their counselling sessions.
How might you feel after counselling?
- Each session will leave you feeling differently, depending on what you have bought to the session to talk about. Generally, you would expect to feel lighter from having shared your worries and stresses, leading to you feeling calmer and clearer in your mind.
- Over time you would expect to develop a greater sense of yourself and who you are and what your needs are.
- This will eventually lead to better understanding of yourself, better relationships, more confidence and improved mental health and general wellbeing.
